About Sea Turtles

Sea Turtles are surfer's natural friend, riding ocean currents across the world and feeding on seagrass and jellyfish.  They can live for up to a hundred years and every year they come back home to the place where they were born and lay their eggs on the beach.

They are one of the earth's oldest species having been swimming our oceans for around 110million years.  Sadly though, they are now facing the threat of extinction.  All seven species of sea turtles are classified as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered.

There are a number of causes, but all of them are manmade:
  • Fishing - Turtles hooked on tuna and swordfish long-lines or tangled in fishing nets.
  • Poaching: Turtles killed for their shells and eggs stolen from nesting grounds.
  • Marine Pollution: Particularly suffocation from plastic bags, which turtles mistake for jellyfish.
  • Loss of Nesting Habitat: Due to development, light pollution, disturbance, etc. [paraphrased from sea turtle trust]

It's essential that we take action to protect Sea Turtles from extinction.  They are a beautiful and magnificent part of our oceans, and also play a critical role in the ecosystems of our seas and beaches.  The loss of Sea Turtles could lead to significant knock-on effects including the loss of many other aquatic species and accelerated coastal erosion.

Vince's Beach is dedicated to championing the cause of the Sea Turtle protection and are supporting a Sea Turtle Charity in efforts to protect the critically endangered leatherback turtle.  As well as helping to promote the cause of Sea Turtle protection, we donate [x proportion] of all sales from our online surf shop to a Sea Turtle Charity.
